Le Samourai was the first of his films that I saw. It was released commercially in Hong Kong in the early seventies and immediately turned Alain Delon into a major star in Asia. We had seen Delon in Rocco and His Brothers and Purple Noon, but Le Samourai made him popular among the general audience. Le Samouraï 1967 Jean-Pierre Melville Alain Delon François Périer Nathalie Delon Cathy Rosier To see how beautiful, moving, exciting and astonishing Melville's 'Le Samourai' is, to recognise it as one of the greatest films ever made, arguably the most perfect, it is necessary to forget everything you've been told about it. Melville’s anachronistic lone warrior/assassin/samurai type wandering through 1967 Paris with its modern metro, fast cars and chic night clubs calls to mind the figure of the drifting samurai/gangster/assassin in cult auteur Seijun Suzuki’s 1960s samurai and yakuza films, especially Kanto Wanderer (1963) and Tokyo Drifter. Melville shows us his lone killer’s methodical precision with great flair, and the police manhunt through the Métro is as good an action sequence as any. The film opens with a purported line from the Book of Bushido – the source of the Japanese warrior class’s knowledge: “There is no greater solitude than that of the samurai, unless perhaps it be that of the tiger in the jungle.” Melville lui offre alors le rôle de Gerbier dans L’Armée des ombres, déjà en gestation.

Jef met alors soigneusement au point un alibi, avec l'aide de sa maîtresse, Jane Lagrange When Jean-Pierre Melville brought a copy of the script to Alain Delon, Delon asked him what the title was. When he was told the title was "Le samouraï", Delon had Melville follow him to his bedroom, where there was only a leather couch and a samurai blade hanging on the wall. Tone and style are everything with Le samouraï.
