We have decided to use the GBIF generated citation on all datasets. Since that is how a dataset should be cited, I believe that information should be in the API response. The rgbif library includes a function, gbif_citation, that will help you properly cite the data downloaded from GBIF. To use, simply pass either a single occurrence key, a dataset key, the results of a call to the occ_search or occ_download_get functions.
